Location: the hotel was so close to the river. The food was outstanding with lots of alternatives. Excellent service from all the accommodating and knowledgeable staff that I interacted with.
The staff were very rude, didn't expect that coming.

The location was great.
The price was extra high for a hotel with no amenities and did not have regular house cleaning.

I checked in and was told the men's jacuzzi was not working. My spouse was very disappointed since we selected this hotel because of the spa. The website had no info about the spa. The next morning I was told the entire women's spa was out of commission. As I was checking out a couple was checking in and was told the spas were working when they weren't. Another lady stopped me after she heard my complaint and told me she brought 25 people with her because of the spa; she called and was told the spa was working only to arrive and the spa wasn't working. This is the 2nd time the men's jacuzzi was not working
Room is very nuce
No info about spa shut down on the website and staff are giving patrons wrong info.

The rooms were very spacious. Also the fitness area was super equipped. It was also nice that one could easily rent a bike for free. Two employees at the reception were very friendly and competent. The view to the river is wonderful if one has a room in direction to the river with a balcony. The bus connection (public) to the city centre works very well and is cheap. But you have to calculate with half an hour travel time.
Some employees at the reception were anything but competent. First, my booking could not be found. After I waited more than half an hour with the employee at the hotline, it turned out that he repeatedely entered my name wrong, although I even wrote down what my first and last name was and he also had my booking confirmation. The rooms were indeed cleaned. But some of the cleaners forgot to fill up new towels, took only a part of the waste and did not put new clean glasses for used ones, so that in two days we had no glasses at all. The refrigerator was unplugged in the meantime - for whatever reason. At 35 degrees outside temperature not very good for perishable goods that were stored in the refrigerator. For breakfast we had to go to the neighbouring restaurant. This is a 1 minute walk and actually no problem, if there would be a varied (and healthy!) breakfast. But this was not the case. There was only the classic, hearty American breakfast. The employee could get an (!) apple from the fruit after repeated requests. Even getting tea instead of coffee turned out to be complicated and took half an hour. One should also use this restaurant for dinner and for visiting the bar. It is sad the restaurant closes already at 9 o'clock in the evening. In total, not what one expects from a 4-stars hotel.

The Avalon and its restaurant are excellent but the location is a bit far from the main downtown area. There is also little local shopping near the hotel.

This was a special occasion and "surprise" destination for my partner's 70th birthday. All of the arrangements and requests were put in place and happened exactly as I had hoped. The staff (regardless of their position) all deliver excellent customer service. This is always my destination when I visit Portland because of the value and the opportunity to relax and indulge in the many choices available in and outside of your hotel!

The location by the tranquil river is fantastic, and the staff are friendly! The clean rooms and good views add to a pleasant atmosphere.
Valet parking is steep at $30 nightly, and the lack of amenities like breakfast and gym is disappointing. My room was also not maintained well.

spa was very nice (steam room and jacuzzi especially). hotel staff was always pleasant. breakfast was plentiful. good location--very quick drive to downtown portland. hotel was very quiet. beds were comfortable and windows were large (probably better to have a river view--ours was a "hillside view" of an office building).
parking was overpriced--at the very least, having a valet was a little silly (the valet would essentially run across the street to get our car, which we could see from the front of the hotel. also, we came in late a few times and had to park ourselves). the valets were always very nice, however.

I decided to write this review because, for the life of me, I don't understand why some people below are complaining about service at this hotel. The service was excellent and the staff were super friendly. In fact, the receptionist upgraded my room for free upon arrival (to river view)! They contacted me 30 minutes after check-in to make sure everything is fine, and they were always helpful and courteous when I needed something.
No fridge in the room, although I didn't need it badly.

From the time we walked in the door we were well taken care of! They were very hospitable and gracious, even when faced with unusual circumstances. The bartender next door was delightful and hotel staff was fabulous! Also love the shower! I will always be coming to the Avalon when I'm in Portland!

The room was super cozy with features like air conditioning, a microwave, and a balcony overlooking the river. The spa had hot tubs and great amenities for relaxation. Enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere while exploring nearby bike trails. The Rosswood restaurant was perfect for waterfront views, too!
